Dusty's Cellar Tradition

A Family Tradition

Making Delicious Food and Happy Memories Since 1981

Clarence “Dusty” Rhodes grew up in Flint, Michigan and developed an appreciation for fine food & wine after a successful career in broadcast journalism allowed him to travel the world. After retiring and returning to Okemos, he opened a series of businesses inspired by his love of hosting a great meal with great company: Elysee Boulangerie French Bakery, Dusty’s English Inn, and in 1981, Dusty’s Cellar. The Wine Bar opened its doors in 1987, and The Tap Room in 2002 by Dusty’s son, Matt Rhodes.

A Michigan State graduate, Dusty was well known locally as the sports announcer at Spartan Stadium and as a 2005 recipient of the university’s Distinguished Alumni Award. His five children all worked alongside each other at the Cellar during its early years, starting a tradition his grandchildren carry on today. Matt Rhodes purchased Dusty’s Cellar from his father in 1995, and he and his wife Caryn continue to own and manage the business. While Dusty passed away in 2010, his legacy lives on in the sharing of great wine, fine food, and a good story with our customers at the Cellar every day.
